Some of you may have noticed I haven't been around here in a while. Well, that's because last week my iBook's hard drive stopped working. Sad The good news is that I got all my data off the drive, found a nice 40GB Samsung hard drive for $86 from NewEgg (it's twice the capacity of the old one, which I wanted to upgrade anyway), and got a guy at work to replace it for me for free. My iBook is fully functional again and has twice the storage capacity, which means I can keep about 19 more gigs of crap on it than was on it before. Wink

Lol good to have you back.  Hmm it seems that even macs have problems every once in a while as well Tongue

But how can you live with only 40gb of storage.  I have about 1.5TB of storage in one rig with only 40gb of space left  Sad

I don't have a lot of big files. I don't have movies or a lot of games and stuff on there. The largest set of files is my music collection, which is only 2.25GB.

What model is your iBook? I ask because about a month ago, my friends iBook's hdd just kicked the bucket, but it was worse for him. He couldn't get his data off it.

It's an iBook 16MB VRAM (Opaque), manufactured in November 2002.

Thanks, I'll ask him next time I see him. There might be a chance that Mac made an *oops*, and you might be able to get a refund on that hdd you got. (Unless it was under warranty)

No, it was well out of warranty; else I never would've cracked it open in the first place.

Your warranty gets voided if you open up the comp? Even on Mac desktop? I can understand a laptop, but I hope its not the same with the desktop.

The hard drive on a laptop isn't considered a user-serviceable part, so it voids the warranty.

Ah, okay. Anyway, I talked the my friend today, and his computer was about a year older than yours, but I am curious about the type of hdd that was used.

I don't know for sure but it was probably a Fujitsu or Hitachi hard drive.  Most laptop manufacturers use either Fujitsu or Hitachi hard drives.
