I am trying to figure out one of my customers problems over the phone since she is disabled so it wouldn't be very easy for her to bring it in to the shop.  She also lives about 50 miles away from town and I really do not feel like driving to her house.  Ok back to the problem.

Whenever she tries to play video files in windows media player it freezes the whole computer.  She can play audio files without any problems.  It is only when she tries to view video files.

Basic specs of her computer

p4 2.4ghz
384mb of PC 2100
Windows XP Home
Windows Media Player 9

I already had her uninstall and reinstall the program, but that did not work.  I had her try disabling her Norton Firewall.

I am not ruling out the chance that it is related to hardware but I would like to try and solve this problem over the phone if at all possible.  If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Can she play the media back in any other media player? (The reason I ask is that maybe one of her codecs got screwed up. For some reason WinDVD quit on me one day, and I couldn't play the DVD in any other player. The codec had gotten screwed up)

Yeah, have her try using like quicktime or something like that. If it freezes on quicktime as well my best guess would be the codec

If it freezes in quicktime as well it would be something other than the codecs.  Quicktime and Windows Media Player don't use the same set of codecs.  Each has its own copy.

Also I went out to her house and picked the computer up today on my way to Milwaukee to do something else so I do have it in the shop now.  I will have to try using a different media player to see if it works.

I have sort of this problem too so I'd be interested on how you end up fixing it. All my videos I have except one play fine. That one only plays audio on winamp, same on wmp, and quicktime says it's missing a file.. Goodluck on this one byteme, I'll post here if I find anything on it.

She couldn't play any video files at all.  It wasn't jsut a certian format that she couldn't play.  It turned out to be the video card that was bad.

I just got mine, and it worked fine for a few weeks. Think I have the same issue? It's a nVidia GeForce FX 5200...

Probably not techy.  You might want to try reformatting your system before you go through the hassle of trying to return your card.

And no Picchioni you don't get commission.

Techy: Are you sure the file that .avi that you have isn't encoded with DivX? That would defiantely screw you up.

I think they are DivX encoded but they did work before... Well anyone have a reason why it would just all of a sudden stop?

Perhaps your DivX codec is corrupted.
