I burnt a custom DVD for my friend (recordings from a vhs tape).  Anyway, I didn't keep copies of the movies I put on the DVD.  Is there any good way (preferably free) to convert the vob files to MPEG (without much, if any loss of quality)?

Are you looking to rip it from a DVD or are the vob files on your hard drive and you want to convert them?  Correct me if I am wrong but aren't DVD videos encoded as MPEGs

I have them on DVD as well as ripped to my hard drive.  I am 99% sure they are MPEG files but I'm looking for a free way to convert them back.

vob files are what the MPEGs are converted into when burnt to a DVD.

You might want to try flaskmpeg.  I haven't used it myself so I couldn't tell you if it is a good program or not.

FYI...I decided to give it a shot and I just renamed the VTS_01_0.VOB file to VTS_01_0.MPEG and it works.  Looks exactly the same.  Simple fix...I think this will solve my problems.  Hopefully it will save other people time trying to figure the same thing out.

hmm that usually doesn't work but I am glad that you finally figured it out.  I will have to remember that when I finally get a DVD burner.

I was trying to convert them all over and it was taking like 1+ hour for 90% of the movies.  Doing 90 movies would have taken forever, so I tried a shortcut.
