Hey guys - I just found a great, free, bulk renaming utility.

http://www.nonags.com/nonags/fileren.html
It's Bulk Rename Utility - 2nd one down

I was having a hard time trying to use the ren command and mv command on both windows and linux with wildcards to achieve what I needed. Both OSes hated removing a period at the beginning of a filename. I thought it would be easy as # ren .* * -- but NO!

This little puppy will crop characters from the beggining/end/middle of a filename, so you're good to go! Enjoy
