Hey guys - I know my pc runs a little on the hot side, but I attribute that to my older silent zalman heatsink as it is not a high-performace heatsink. So here's the deal. I have an ASUS P4G8X mobo with a p4 2.8 proc. I installed my own temp probe right between the die and the heatsink. I was fiddiling with prime95 and the burn-in module from sisoft sandra and noticed it was reporting some HOT temps. Hot like max 85* C hot!!!

Now, the wierd thing is that my probe reports idle 38-41 and then max load of 57. That's nothing stellar, but it's not dangerous and it's ok. (actually a pretty normal temp range) If I load up motherboard monitor 5 - it reports idle of 51, and max of 86 (all celsius). At that temp, something should go very very wrong, and fast, right?

I've done a stupid overclock way back when, and my pc (this pc) has gotten way too hot, and it's gone BEEEEP and shut off after like ten minutes. At that point my mobo said, yeah, you overclocked it, so here are your default settings back. It's a 2.8 and I'm fine with that, the overclocking was just an experiment, but I know what happens when it truly overheats, and the proc steps out and shuts off.

So, do you think there could be something wrong with my mobo's temp monitor? I've gamed marathon sessions without ever peaking over 136* F, about 57 C. (on my probe).

I only say this because my mobo's cpu temps are WAY hot from normal, and MY probe's temps are pretty normal. At those hot temps, something would go wrong, and at those normal temps, things would go fine- like they have been going.

What do yo uall think?

Well, problem solved - albeit in a dumb way. I had my thermal probe between the die and heatsink. That was messing up the transfer of heat a TON. Now my temps are normal, and my humilty-o-meter is peaking. Hope you all learned something from this - read faqs on your products. Putting the probe there was not anywhere in the directions for the product - but was number 1 on the online faq.

Glad that you got the problem figured out and you should have just asked me.  I could have told you that you shouldn't put the probe between the heat sink and heat spreader.    For best performance you are supposed to thread the probe through the processor pins and place the probe on the underside of the processor (If possible.  may not be possible in all cases).  Also that is weird that a company would have one thing in the directions and then a totally different thing in the online FAQ.  Just out of curiousity, what thermal probe do you have?

Well, it's built into the tT Hardcano 10

POS manual in my opinion....
