I was surfing the web today and found a story about Orion Multisystems which is a company that builds personal super computers. The high end model features up to 96 nodes. I find it quite interesting and with all the technological break throughs, it is about time that personal super computers become a reality.
Here is a link to the companies site

Flying majestically over the digital wasteland, blades chopping at the air at 3.4GHz, the mighty ROFLCOPTER soars.
The ROFLCOPTER is an important part of the defense of LOLrville. Along with the LMAOplane, TTYLnukes, and our troops carrying AFK47s, the ROFLCOPTER is used as a mobile troop carrier, and anti-TTYLTank weapons platform.

Even though I'm not a fan of Mac's they have the third best super computer system in the world at Virginia Tech called "System X". It was built for only 3.2 million compared to the 200 odd million for the other systems. Any, if you know anything about building clusters, its not that hard to build a bewoulf cluster. The site looks pretty nice though, but I couldn't find any prices on the systems.

Leet words possibly indicating illegal activity:
• "warez" or "w4r3z": Illegally copied software available for download.
• "h4x": Read as "hacks," or what a computer hacker does.
• "sploitz" (short for exploits): Vulnerabilities in computer software used by hackers.
• "pwn": A typo-deliberate version of own, a slang term that means to dominate. This could also be spelled "0\/\/n3d" or "pwn3d," among other variations.

That is true but that would take up a lot more space than one of these things. According to the site, the 96 node system is only 17"W x 27"H x 25"D or about the size of a small file cabinet.

I must say, I am impressed! It would be awesome for people to be able to get such a system, but it's going to take a major price dive to get the masses to buy in. Still, it's a good sign that the technology is making its way towards the consumers.
Oh, and about a beowolf cluster - I was half jokingly going to see how many POS computers I could pick up for a thousand dollars and make a huge setup. I think I'd also have to air condition my basement and buy a nuclear reactor to power it all, but that still won't change my dream of a basement full of humming computers running prime95 just because they can.
