File encryption

I am looking into a way to encrypt my files. I want at least 128 bit encyrption. Basically i'm not too worried about it if it is on my hard drive (although I want to encrypt that too) I want to be able to burn the data (encrypted) to a CD for secured backups.
I have been told alot about PGP and gave it a try, but it puts everything into 1 encyrpted file instead of allowing you to just encrypt an entire folder and still be able to browse it without using their software. Anyone know of anything good?

I know that Windows XP has an option to encrypt the contents of a folder by right clicking the folder and going to properties. I don't know of any other options that encrypt files without putting them in a single folder.

I know windows has EFS built in, however that can be cracked easily. It also doesn't allow you to store encrypted data onto discs (to my knowledge anyway).

I found the old school vesion of PGP....I think it is PGP 5....The newest version that is w/o a government key
But yeah it does suck that it does each file by itself and not the folder
