Modding The PS2

I have one of the older PS2s that has issues with the laser eye after too much use. I could send it make to Sony and have to replace it, but I have sending [FILTER]crap[/FILTER] back, and it takes forever for them to do the replacement and send it back to you.
I'd like to do some mods to the PS2, but not one of the "soder a new chip" mods. I've read that you can hook up a harddrive to it and rip games and such to it, and then run everything off the harddrive. I'd like to end up using the PS2 as a Linux box, and then eventually get a Beowulf cluster of PS2s and other consoles, but thats a long term plan. Right now I'd like to focus on a way to get a harddrive hooked up to the PS2 and and doing things like that.
What I need from you guys is some articles on how I would do it. I know there are articles on the net about it, but I hate having to search for it all, and I'm sure at least some of you have done things like this before and could help me out.

What's funny is, every time somebody gives me a PS2 that they say the laser died, opening the case up and cleaning it seems to work really well...I mananged to get a free one for myself that way...
As for the ripping to an HD, yes, that's possible. They had a segment on TSS about it...(can't find link - sorry).
As for Linux, I saw an article on AnandTech about putting it on Xboxes...

I don't know this for sure but I believe that the PS2 Linux kits included a version of Gentoo that had all the drivers for the PS2 built into it. I am sure that as long as you could find the linux drivers for the ps2 hardware you could do the same with any distro of Linux...

i have modded just about every consol to the fullest extent of my ability and to be perfectly honest, dont do the ps2 linux thing. its slow as [FILTER]crap[/FILTER] and annoying and not built well. i would send your ps2 back, get a new one then sell it, get an xbox plop a solderless chip in there and you can copy games to the xbox's hdd or send them over a network to you comps hdd. also i run xebian on my xbox (xbox version of debian) and it runs realy nice
