I'm considering building a PC this summer, mainly because I'd like something to play games on, I'd like to build my own computer, I'd like something I can upgrade over time (but I can't afford a PowerMac), and I have a Mac already, so a PC might be nice. Anyway, I'm considering a system built around the Athlon 64. Does this seem like a good idea to all you experts?

The Athlon 64 is a good processor for gaming.  However if you are going to be doing a lot of multitasking like I do I would consider getting a P4 with hyper threading.  I have noticed that with intense multitasking the P4 performs a quicker and windows loads faster as well.

Does the normal version of Windows XP Pro run okay on a 64-bit processor (specifically, an Athlon 64)?

From what I have heard yes.  The Athlon 64 is backwards compatible with 32bit software and applications.

Haha, more like you hope it will have 64bit support. And lets look at Mircosoft here...They can barely run the OS on a 32bit let alone a 64 right now. And of course, the release date is going to be pushed back...

It would also be much faster on Dual Xeons with HT  Tongue

But anyways I am sure that dual opterons and dual xeons are out of mipadi's budget...

My friend just built an Athlon 64 system, and was looking for an os to "just friggin' work!" Seriously, I could see the veins in his neck. He's using the Xp-64 beta, which doesn't work to say the least. So he messed around with linux, and being a lin-n00b really didin't have much sucsess. (although linux-64 would be the best way to go for a good OS on a 64 bit machine!) So he finally settled with XP Pro, despite being 32 bit. Let's face it - Unless you get into linux, xp is the best solution. I've been down both roads, and can say that while Micro$oft is getting me angry on a daily basis now, it's still much less a headache to fix and get working than linux. Untill xp-64 comes out, use Xp-Pro, because none of your apps (well, probably) are going to be 64 bit anyways. -Bill
