So I move into the new house and find out it has T1. Needless to say that didn't turn out too well so I'm stuck with DSL. Which I have to say can't hold a candle to my old cable connection. When I get back tonight I'll upload a few pics of what all I have in this mess of a house. Just to be brief I've got everything from super old lan cables to a ton of phone wires and old modem lines....

Few questions for you...

- First off, you expected your parents to pay $700 a month to continue the T1 service at your new house?
- What is the speed of your new dsl connection and what is the speed of your old cable connection?
- Cable isn't a possibility at your new house?
- How old are the phone lines that run in your neighborhood?

Actually it's also split across the road and we were only going to have to pay $150 or so to share the connection with them.

Previous speed:
Bandwidth Down 181 Kbits/sec
Bandwidth Up 28 Kbits/sec

Currently:
Bandwidth Down 365 Kbits/sec
Bandwidth Up 176 Kbits/sec

I just tested the current speed a second ago and it makes no sense at all to me. Everything loads and downloads so slow and yet I have those high speeds?
Small town and cable internet is basically non exsistant
I'm not sure of the age of the lines in the neighborhood...

I'll take a few pictures in an hour or so to show you what I'm dealing with though.

Here's some pics for you. Just remind me next time to get a pic of the old lan cables I have laying around aswell..
There's also a closet in the garage (which is like outdoor carpeted and wood paneled) with another set of those phone boxes. Along with another smaller set on another wall in the basement.

Sorry Ace they're kinda big pics so they might take some time to load up...

I would kill to have cable, dsl, or T1 available here...
I can have satellite internet, but its awefully expensive for the mandatory setup fee and normal monthly price, plus, it is a rather slow high speed option, and it would stink for gaming. Teh end of teh line for cable is only around 4.5 miles away, but of course the subdivision i live in is surrounded by large farms and no evil cable company would want to extend their services here.  smiley

Worst of all im stuck with free AOhelL dialup

I don't share the connection. If I was going to get T1 I would have shared it with another house/business (can't recall) across and down the street.

Well along with a few of the old lan cables there also seems to be some extra cat
5 laying around. Recently I got one of those out and rolled it up incase I'd need an extra sooner or later. After poking it through the floor, unraveling it from a pipe, getting it from the edge of the crawlspace of that part of the house and the basement, through a whole mess of wires which I had to untangle it from then later untangle it from itself I finally got it out in one straight line. I think I rolled it around my arm 20 times or so. Tongue

Is a cord that long worth anything really? I figured it could be useful for lans or something. Am I loosing any speeds at that length aswell?

As long as it is under 100 feet you will be fine.  100 feet is pretty much the maximum distance you can go with cat5 cable without experiencing loss of speed or connection.  If you needed to go any longer than 100 feet you would have to throw a repeater in there or use fiber.

I don't know.  I have never gone over 100 feet.  If the network is setup correctly you shouldn't need to go more than 100 feet anyways.

At my previous house there were cat5/phone line jacks in everyroom, and as I recall those were all straight shots to the rooms. Would speeds be slower because of that kind of long wiring?

As i have said before, as long as you don't exceed 100 feet you shouldn't have any problems...
