Microsoft announced Wednesday it would offer a low-cost starter edition of its Windows XP operating system in Asia starting in October, as it strives to hold onto market share facing erosion from the open-source Linux system and software piracy.

Wow! With Microsoft XP SE you can run up to three programs at the same time! That should take a lot of market share away from Linux, since we all know Linux is so bad at multitasking!

What is the point of having a "starter edition?" Are people in Asia really not smart enough to understand how to use Windows?

Isn't XP home $99, and XP Pro/2000, $199? I think thats pretty cheap. I've seen a lot more expensive stuff, but then again, it was more reliable.

Well, Microsoft is trying to get everyone to upgrade to XP and hopes to do that with XP SE.  Many people I deal with at work do not want to upgrade to XP because it is too expensive in their eyes.

Well, I can understand why a bussiness would not want to upgrade to XP. They would have to buy a whole net copy for each computer. You don't have to do that with 2000.

Who would spend over $100,000 putting 2000 or XP on their companies comps (if a big company, more like $1,000,000) when they could just buy a couple copies for around $5,000?

Actully there might be some pratical use twards this. Gamming and internet centers for one thing.. your really not multitasking to begin with. Business keep people from chatting and playing games and more focused on their work. Schools same consept... Its really not a bad idea but microsoft is marketing it wrong....

I guess that all works, but did you miss the thing I just said? If they keep the same marketing plan they do with XP, those internet centers, schools, and bussinesses would be paying for every copy of XP.

I'm also guessing that it will be the same price as XP Home, if not a little lower. For an extra couple of books, just get the full one, unless you want to teach a 3 year how to use Windows. (Not like they couldn't teach themselbes)

Well most companies do Ace.  I think you are forgetting that Microsoft has something called volume licensing...

thats not what i ment price wise. I was thinking more on the line of the abliity to keep systems secure, keep people focused on tasks, etc...

Well, I think most people here know that that is a pretty much standard Microsoft OS price, but I still have always thought it was too friggin pricey.

I mean, $200+ for an OS....? So uh... how's yours coming, Ace?  Wink

Why would you actually consider buying one? I mean, sure, they're powerful, but they're more powerful than what almost all home users need in a computer. Unless you are designing airplanes or searching for oil, you can probably get a very powerful home computer for much less money.

Well, why do you have a Mac? They have enough power to do a lot of stuff. I'm not a Mac fan, and I don't want another PC. I can get programs for Sun that allow me to emulate Windows, or even buy an addon chip to the Sun that will allow me to have Windows on it. I am a coder and need to be experienced in a lot of areas. My friend has a Sun, and its very nice to devlop on, and it is very, very fast. (And its over 5 years old as well.)

If you're going to emulate Windows on it, why not just buy a nice Windows box?

I already have a nice Windows box, and a Sun will be able to run Windows at least 5 times faster. I also said that I didn't want another PC.
