TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment announced it will be releasing a "Pearl White" limited-edition summer color model of the PlayStation 2 in Japan on July 15. While Sony released a similar color called "Ceramic White" in the winter and spring, the company explained that the new model will be glazed, giving it a pearly sheen.

Too bad there's not too much more info. I guess there isn't that much need for it though.

What is so special about it other than the pearly white color and several features that have been removed?  I would rather have a black ps2 and have all the other stuff come included with the package.  Plus I like black better anyways.

You can get white, red, blue or yellow limited edition PS2's from www.playstation.com
I just got the Snow White one a couple of weeks ago. $199 + shipping, and they come with the matching vertical stand and controller. They are very nice! Unfortunately the silver ones sold out really quick.

It makes sense if this is your first PS2, but are people really going to go out and buy one if they already have a regular and perfectly working PS2 at home?

If you want something as limited as those are, yes. There were only just over 600 of each color made. That is the smallest of fractions of the total number of PS2 consoles sold in the USA. I think it's worth the extra fifty bucks to have that limited edition, besides I'm selling my old clear case PS2 on Ebay right now, and it'll go for almost as much as the limited edition one. No real monetary loss for me. I wish I could have got one of the silver ones, but those sold out quick. And they were listed at 400 bucks when they were first released. I'm surprised that at 200 there are even any left still. Except for the yellow ones, I saw one at the Metreon and they are hideous.

I say buy a PS2 and paint it yourself if you want it a special color. As i did:

I agree that custom jobs are sweet, but this actually has long term value, being a limited edition. The cases are also made of a thicker fiberglass material, rather than the original plastic. And unfortunately, even on my best day, I could never match the quality of paint they did. Huh, now all my consoles are different colors, green Xbox, metallic blue Gamecube, white PS2. It's the U.N. of consoles over here.
